Neighborhoods shaped by Reading Road

Avondale was a rural suburb incorporated in 1864 and annexed in 1896. It became largely Jewish in the early 1900s and largely Black after mid-century urban renewal pushed families out of the West End. The Cincinnati Zoo is here, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the University of Cincinnati are close by.

Bond Hill began in 1870 as a cooperative, alcohol-free railroad suburb and joined the city in 1903. Roselawn, annexed in 1905, followed. The 2020 Census counted about 11,345 people in Avondale, 7,002 in Bond Hill and 7,039 in Roselawn, where more than one in five residents was 65 or older.

Families in Avondale can reach 988 by phone or text if a death was a suicide.

Mansions, Tudors and garden apartments

Avondale and North Avondale have big early 1900s houses, some split into apartments, as well as newer mixed-income developments. Bond Hill's Bella Vista Historic District, named in 2019, is the city's first mostly Tudor Revival district, built in the 1920s and 1930s.

Roselawn has brick ranches, small apartment buildings and senior housing along Reading Road. An older person living alone in a Roselawn apartment is a common situation behind an unattended-death cleanup, and the building manager usually needs to be involved.

Steps that help in these neighborhoods

In Avondale's larger houses that have been split into apartments, a problem in one unit can reach a shared stairwell or basement. Let the owner know right away, and ask the provider to check the hallway and any shared laundry room.

If the incident involved a crime, the District 4 report number matters. The state victim services office, at 614-466-5610, can explain whether a Bond Hill or Avondale household qualifies for help with scene cleaning, which state law caps at $750 per claim.

Families in Roselawn's senior apartments sometimes face a move-out deadline in the lease. Ask the building manager for that date in writing so the cleanup and the removal of furniture can be scheduled around it.

Expressways across the middle of the county

I-75 runs along the Mill Creek valley on the west side of this area. The Norwood Lateral, Ohio 562, links I-75 near St. Bernard and Bond Hill with I-71 on the other side of Norwood. Reading Road is the main north-south street through Avondale, Bond Hill and Roselawn.

Spring Grove Avenue runs along the cemetery's edge in 45232. Apartment buildings along Reading Road may have limited loading space, so ask the manager about parking before work starts.

Asked about Avondale

Does Golf Manor or Amberley Village have different cleanup rules?
No. Golf Manor and Amberley Village each have their own police, but the sequence matches the city's: officers and, when needed, coroner investigators clear the home, and then the owner or estate picks a cleanup company. Both villages sit inside 45237, so a call to (513) 962-0944 reaches a provider that covers them. Village offices may still have rules about trash containers or work vehicles parked on residential streets.
My grandmother lived alone in a Roselawn apartment. Who pays for cleanup?
The building owner's insurance often handles the unit itself, and the family is usually responsible for her belongings. Talk to the Roselawn building manager first so everyone agrees on who is hiring the company. Then the referral line can link either of you with an independent provider for 45237, which can give the manager and the family the same written scope.
Is Spring Grove Village covered?
Yes. Spring Grove Village, also called Winton Place, is in 45232 along with Winton Hills and part of St. Bernard. Cincinnati Police District 4 covers the city neighborhoods, and the St. Bernard police cover addresses inside that village. Homes facing the Spring Grove Cemetery grounds are covered the same as any other street in the ZIP.
