River towns, fast-growing suburbs and farm townships
Butler County sits between Cincinnati and Dayton, with the Great Miami River cutting through the middle. The 2020 Census counted 390,357 residents, the seventh-largest total in Ohio. Hamilton is the county seat, and Middletown, Fairfield, Oxford, Monroe and Trenton are the other cities most people know.
Housing here changes a lot from one end of the county to the other. Hamilton keeps 19th-century districts such as German Village, Dayton Lane and Rossville, while West Chester Township grew fast from the 1960s on and is now the most populous township in Ohio. Oxford is a college town built around Miami University, and Morgan and Milford townships are still mostly fields and woodlots.
That range shapes what a cleanup looks like. A brick house in Hamilton's East End, a student rental near Uptown Oxford and a farmhouse off State Route 126 near Okeana each involve different materials, different access and different people who have to sign off. This line only connects Butler County callers with an outside cleanup company; it does not do the work.

The Butler County Coroner and the step before cleanup
Butler County voters elect their coroner, and state law requires that person to be a physician. Dr. Lisa K. Mannix holds the job and runs the office from the Government Services Center at 315 High Street in downtown Hamilton. Sudden, unexpected and unattended deaths anywhere in the county are reported to that office, usually by the officers or deputies who respond.
In October 2025 the county broke ground on Princeton Road in Hamilton for a new building that will hold both the coroner's office and the county's 911 dispatch center. Officials projected an opening in 2027, so check the coroner's website for the current address before making a trip to High Street.
Neither the coroner nor any Butler County police agency cleans a home. After the investigation ends and the property is released, the person in charge of it decides on cleanup, whether that is a family in Fairfield, a Middletown landlord or an executor living out of state. That is the point to call (513) 962-0944.
The coroner's office also refers families to the Butler County LOSS/DOSS team, which supports people after a death by suicide or a drug overdose. If you are having thoughts of suicide yourself, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is reachable by phone call or text message at 988.
Which police agency responds where
Most Butler County cities run their own departments: the Hamilton Police Department, the Middletown Division of Police, and the Fairfield, Oxford, Monroe and Trenton police departments. West Chester Township has a township police force of about 90 sworn officers, and Fairfield Township has its own department as well.
Liberty Township contracts with the Butler County Sheriff's Office, which keeps deputies at a substation on Winners Circle Drive. The sheriff's road patrol also covers unincorporated land that has no contract, which takes in much of the western and northern countryside, and Hanover Township has deputies assigned to it. On Miami University property in Oxford, university police have jurisdiction and assist the city under a mutual aid agreement.
Whoever responds, their role ends with the investigation. A Middletown detective or a deputy on a rural road near Darrtown will not arrange cleanup, although they can tell you when the scene has been released back to you.
Okeana, Somerville and the countryside without a town page
Two ZIP codes are handled from this county page. Okeana (45053) is an unincorporated community in Morgan Township, on Dry Fork Creek and State Route 126 about ten miles southwest of Hamilton; it was called Tariff until 1858. Somerville (45064) is a former village in Milford Township whose voters dissolved it into the township in 2016, and the 2020 Census counted 258 people there.
Morgan Township runs right to the Indiana state line and also holds Indian Creek and a stretch of the Great Miami River. Milford Township, around Somerville, is crossed by U.S. 127 and State Routes 73, 177 and 744, with Darrtown and Collinsville nearby. Both ZIPs use the same (513) 962-0944 line as the rest of the county, but addresses across the line in Indiana are outside this service.
Out here, expect longer drives on two-lane roads and properties set back from the road. Before calling, have the exact address, any gate or lane directions, and the name of the person who holds keys to the house or outbuilding. That saves time for everyone in places like Okeana, where houses can be far apart.
Town pages for the rest of the county
The larger places each have their own page: Hamilton (45011, 45013, 45015), Fairfield (45014), Middletown (45042, 45044), West Chester and Liberty Township (45069), Oxford (45056), Monroe (45050) and Trenton (45067). Each one covers the local police agency, housing and roads in more detail.
Those pages differ because the places do. Middletown and Monroe both reach into Warren County, Oxford regulates rentals through a city permit program, and Liberty Township relies on sheriff's deputies rather than a police department of its own.
Paying for cleanup in Butler County
Homeowner's insurance often pays toward biohazard cleanup after a death or a crime, but each policy has its own terms and limits. In rental housing, a tenant's policy mainly protects belongings, and the building owner's policy is usually the one that responds to the structure. Landlords with apartments along Route 4 or student houses in Oxford should call their carrier early.
If a crime caused the damage, an eligible Butler County victim may be repaid for the reasonable, necessary cost of cleaning the scene; Ohio Revised Code 2743.51 caps that at $750 for each claim. The Attorney General's Crime Victim Services office explains how to apply. Butler County callers can dial 614-466-5610 or the toll-free 800-282-0515.

Questions about Butler County
- Does the Butler County Coroner's Office clean the home after a death?
- No. The coroner's office on High Street in Hamilton investigates certain deaths and determines cause and manner, but it does not clean property. Once the home is released, the family, landlord or estate arranges cleanup privately. A call to (513) 962-0944 then puts you in touch with a separate cleanup company working the county.
- Are Okeana and Somerville covered by this referral line?
- Yes. Okeana (45053) in Morgan Township and Somerville (45064) in Milford Township are both covered through the (513) 962-0944 line. Give the full rural address and any directions for long lanes or outbuildings when you call, since farm properties in western and northern Butler County can be hard to find.
- What if the house is in the Warren County part of Middletown or Monroe?
- Warren County is also covered on the same (513) 962-0944 line, so the phone call works the same way. The difference is the coroner: a death on the Warren County side is handled by the Warren County Coroner rather than the Butler County office in Hamilton.
- Is an address across the Indiana line near Oxford or Okeana covered?
- No. Both Oxford Township and Morgan Township border Indiana, but this line only covers the listed Ohio counties. Properties in Indiana are outside the service area, even when they are a short drive from Oxford or Okeana. Ohio addresses inside those two townships are served as usual.
