An old pike town that filled in fast
Monroe was laid out in 1817 on the Dayton and Cincinnati pike and named for President James Monroe. For a long time it stayed tiny; by the 1830s it had one store and 119 residents. Real growth began around 1960, and the 2020 Census counted 15,412 people.
That history leaves a small older core along Main Street, surrounded by subdivisions and newer construction on both sides of I-75. Newer homes here usually mean drywall, carpet and forced-air systems, so cleaning, odor control and replacement of affected materials often matter as much as the visible area.

Route 63, Route 4 and Exit 29
State Route 63 starts at a trumpet interchange with State Route 4 on Monroe's west side and runs as a four-lane divided highway, signed Hamilton-Lebanon Road, to I-75 at Exit 29. East of the interstate it becomes Main Street on its way to Lebanon.
State Route 4 links Monroe with Hamilton to the south and Middletown to the north, and State Route 73 crosses Lemon Township. A Norfolk Southern main line also runs through the center of Lemon Township.
Coming from Dayton or Cincinnati, most drivers reach the city on I-75 and leave at Exit 29.
Police and coroner in a two-county city
The Monroe Police Department responds inside city limits on both the Butler and Warren County sides. The coroner depends on the county: a sudden or unattended death in the Butler County part is handled by the Butler County Coroner, whose office is in downtown Hamilton on High Street, while the Warren County part falls to the Warren County Coroner.
After release, cleanup is up to the owner. Here that might be a family in an older house near Main Street, a landlord renting a newer townhouse, or an adult child managing a parent's home from out of state. The same phone line covers both counties.
City officers take the report on both sides of the county line, so the report number always comes from the same department. Insurers and the state crime victim fund may both ask for it.
What to do next in Monroe
Call the insurer for the Monroe house before any work begins and ask how the policy handles biohazard cleanup; terms vary from company to company. In a rental here, the tenant's coverage is mostly for belongings and the owner's for the building itself.
An executor living outside the area can ask a relative or a neighbor on the street to meet the crew, or set up a lockbox. If the death happened in a house on the Warren County side, ask the Warren County Coroner rather than the Hamilton office about reports and release.

Landmarks people use for directions
Cincinnati Premium Outlets, near I-75 in Monroe, is a landmark most visitors know. The Lux Mundi statue now stands where the King of Kings statue, nicknamed Touchdown Jesus, stood before lightning and fire destroyed it in 2010.
Those landmarks help when describing a location, especially for a property off a side road between Route 4 and the interstate. Monroe Local School District serves the city and is another name callers can use to orient a provider.
For family members coming in from out of town, the outlets and the Lux Mundi statue along I-75 are easy places to meet a relative or neighbor who has a key.

Asked about Monroe
- Which coroner handles a death in Monroe, Ohio?
- That turns on which side of the Butler-Warren county line the address is on. Most of Monroe is in Butler County, so the Butler County Coroner's Office in Hamilton handles those cases. The Warren County portion goes to the Warren County Coroner. Either way, neither office cleans the home.
- Is the Warren County side of Monroe covered by this line?
- Yes. The (513) 962-0944 line covers both Butler and Warren counties, so any 45050 address can be referred to a provider. Mention which side of I-75 the property is on when you call. City police respond on both sides, but the coroner depends on which county the house is in.
- Can Ohio's crime victim program help with cleanup costs in Monroe?
- Possibly. Under Ohio Revised Code 2743.51, the state fund for crime victims can pay back an eligible victim for cleaning the scene, with a ceiling of $750 for each claim. Crime Victim Services, at 614-466-5610 or toll-free 800-282-0515, can explain who qualifies and how to apply.
