A county of fast-growing suburbs and old river towns

Warren County was set up on May 1, 1803, and named for Dr. Joseph Warren, a hero of the Revolution. The 2020 census counted 242,337 people, which makes it one of the larger counties in the region even though much of the land east of Lebanon still reads as farm country.

The southern end along I-71, around Mason and Deerfield Township, filled with subdivisions, apartment complexes and office campuses over the last few decades. Older brick and frame houses sit in the historic cores of Lebanon, Waynesville and Franklin, where porches face the sidewalk and lots are narrow.

Two rivers shape the place. The Little Miami River zig-zags across the county from north to south, past Waynesville, Oregonia, Morrow and Kings Mills. The Great Miami River cuts through the northwest corner at Franklin, near the Butler and Montgomery county lines.

The Warren County Coroner's role, and where it ends

Ohio has no medical examiner system in this part of the state. Voters here choose the coroner, Ohio law says that person has to be a doctor, and the county's officials directory places the office at 406 Justice Drive in Lebanon, on the government campus beside the commissioners.

When a death in Warren County is sudden, violent or unexplained, police notify the coroner's office, which decides whether to examine the person and later rules on cause and manner of death. The family's funeral home works with that office on release, which is a separate step from anything that happens at the house in Mason or Pleasant Plain.

Nobody from the Justice Drive office or the police scrubs a room. Once investigators leave and the house is released, the next steps fall to the homeowner, the estate's executor or the landlord, and that is the point where families in Warren County usually start looking for a cleanup company.

Police coverage changes from township to township

Warren County's cities run their own departments: the Mason Police Department on Mason-Montgomery Road, the Lebanon Division of Police on South Broadway, the Franklin Division of Police on Anderson Street, plus Springboro and Carlisle. Waynesville has a village department as well.

Townships vary. Hamilton Township, around Maineville and Murdock, fields its own police department on State Route 48. Deerfield Township, home to Kings Mills and Landen, uses a Warren County Sheriff's Office post. Most other unincorporated ground answers to the sheriff, whose office sits in the Criminal Justice Building on Memorial Drive in Lebanon.

These arrangements can shift. Maineville's coverage from Hamilton Township was in dispute in late 2024, with the sheriff named as the fallback. For a property anywhere in Warren County, dial 911 and dispatch sends the right agency; ask that agency when the home will be released.

Town pages, and the Warren County ZIPs covered here

Six town pages go deeper: Mason (45040), Lebanon (45036), Springboro (45066), Franklin and Carlisle (45005), Kings Mills and Maineville (45034 and 45039), and Waynesville (45068). Each covers that area's housing, roads and police in more detail.

Four Warren County ZIPs have no page of their own. Oregonia (45054) is a riverside community in Washington Township on the east bank of the Little Miami, about five miles northeast of Lebanon, where the old rail line is now the Little Miami bike trail. South Lebanon (45065), first called Deerfield, is a village of 6,384 people that straddles Union and Hamilton townships.

Morrow (45152) lies wholly inside Salem Township, which the Little Miami splits down the middle; the village was platted in 1845 when the railroad reached it and is named for Governor Jeremiah Morrow. Pleasant Plain (45162) is a village of 129 residents in Harlan Township, the farm township that also holds Butlerville and the crossroads of Level.

Calls from all four of those ZIPs use the same number, (513) 962-0944, and are connected to the same kind of independent provider as calls from Mason or Lebanon.

Rural Warren County and the county lines

Out in Harlan, Salem and Washington townships, homes can sit well back from the road, with barns, garages and outbuildings that may need attention too. Mention any of that on the call so the provider taking a job near Morrow or Pleasant Plain can plan equipment and disposal.

Two Warren County cities spill across a county line. Small parts of Springboro and Carlisle lie in Montgomery County, and properties on that side route to the Dayton-area line at (937) 200-8811. Loveland's Warren County section, in Deerfield Township, stays on the 513 number.

Landlords with rentals in South Lebanon or Franklin and adult children handling a parent's house from out of state can arrange access by phone. Most providers can photograph the work and talk through what was removed from the property.

Paying for cleanup in Warren County

A Warren County homeowner's policy often helps with biohazard cleanup, but coverage hinges on the exact wording, so call the insurer before work starts. Tenants in Mason apartment complexes should know that renters insurance mainly protects belongings; the building usually falls under the landlord's policy.

When a crime caused the damage, an eligible victim may get back reasonable costs of cleaning the scene, to a limit of $750 a claim, by applying to the state Attorney General's victim program (614-466-5610 or 800-282-0515). Keep receipts and the Warren County police report number for that claim.

Before signing anything for a house in Deerfield or Turtlecreek Township, get a written scope and ask how the crew is trained under OSHA's bloodborne pathogens rule. When someone in a Warren County family has died by suicide, dialing or texting 988 reaches the national crisis lifeline's counselors day or night.

Questions about Warren County

After a home death in Lebanon or Mason, will the Warren County Coroner's office handle the cleanup?
Not at all. The coroner's office in Lebanon investigates sudden or unexplained deaths and works with the funeral home on release of the person. Cleaning the room is not part of that role. When the Justice Drive staff and officers wrap up, the owner or estate picks who cleans, and a call to (513) 962-0944 links them with a provider that already takes jobs between Mason and Morrow.
Who polices my area of Warren County?
It depends on the address. Mason, Lebanon, Springboro, Franklin and Carlisle have city departments, Waynesville has a village department, and Hamilton Township runs its own police. Deerfield Township and most other townships rely on the Warren County Sheriff's Office. In an emergency, 911 dispatch decides which agency responds.
I live in Morrow or Oregonia. Is my home covered?
Yes. All of Warren County is covered, including Morrow (45152), Oregonia (45054), South Lebanon (45065) and Pleasant Plain (45162). Phoning (513) 962-0944 from a farm road in Salem or Washington Township reaches the same kind of outside cleanup firm a Lebanon caller gets. Describe any barns, garages or outbuildings so the crew can plan for them.
My house is in the Montgomery County part of Springboro. Which number do I call?
The parcel's county, not the mailing city, decides the number. Homes on the Montgomery County side of Springboro or Carlisle belong on (937) 200-8811. Homes on the Warren County side use (513) 962-0944. If you are not sure, the county auditor's property search will show which county the parcel is in.
