County Coroners in Southwest Ohio: How the System Works
Ohio guide, last checked October 2, 2026
Every county in Southwest Ohio has its own elected coroner, a physician who investigates sudden, violent and unexplained deaths under Ohio Revised Code chapter 313. There is no medical examiner in this region. The coroner's staff handle identification, belongings and death records, but they never clean the home. Below is a county-by-county table of the 19 offices.
The answer, first
Every county from the Ohio River to Logan County puts a doctor in the coroner's job by popular vote. The coroner investigates deaths that are violent, suspicious or unexpected, identifies the person, notifies family and issues findings for the death certificate. Coroners do not clean homes. Hamilton County's office is in Blue Ash; Montgomery County's is in downtown Dayton.
An elected doctor in every county
Ohio is one of the states that still elects coroners. In all 19 counties this referral line touches, from Hamilton on the Ohio River up to Logan and Champaign, voters choose a coroner who must be a physician. Chapter 313 of the Ohio Revised Code sets out the office's powers and duties.
Larger counties run full-time operations with forensic pathologists, investigators and a morgue. The Montgomery County office works as one unit with the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory at 361 West Third Street in Dayton, which handles toxicology, firearms and other lab work. Smaller counties such as Darke or Brown keep a lean office and send autopsies to a larger facility.
The Darke County coroner's own page explains this split plainly. It notes that larger county coroners keep morgues and laboratories, and that smaller counties often use those services on a fee basis. So a death in Greenville or Georgetown may be examined in another county even though the local coroner signs off on the findings.
Which deaths go to the coroner
A coroner in Butler, Clark or any other Ohio county looks into deaths caused by criminal or violent means, accidents, and deaths that are suspicious or unusual. So does a sudden death of someone who looked well that morning. In a fatal crash on I-75 or I-71, the coroner tests the blood alcohol level of the person killed, according to the Darke County description of the job.
Most deaths at a nursing home in Fairborn or under hospice in Anderson Township never reach the coroner. When a physician has been treating the person for a known illness, that doctor can usually sign the death certificate. Police and medics at the scene decide whether to call the coroner's office when a death at home is not clearly expected.

What the office does for families
Families tend to deal with the coroner's office about four things: release of the person to a funeral home, identification, personal belongings and paperwork. The Hamilton County Coroner's website has separate pages for decedent release, identifying a person, picking up belongings, death certificates and autopsy reports, which gives a good picture of the process across the region.
Reports take time. Clark County's page on death certificates and reports says findings can be ready in a few days or can take four to eight weeks, depending on what kind of examination was done. Funeral homes in Springfield, Troy and elsewhere know the routine and can often handle the release step for you.
If you need official copies of a death certificate, the coroner's findings feed into it, but the copies themselves usually come from the local health department's vital statistics office. In Clark County, for example, those copies come from the Clark County Combined Health District on East Home Road in Springfield.
What the coroner does not do
Coroner investigators may visit a house in Norwood or Englewood to collect information and photographs, but their job ends there. None of the coroner pages reviewed for this guide lists cleaning as a duty, and none of these offices sends crews to remove flooring or treat odor.
Police departments and sheriff's offices work the same way. After the person has been taken into care and any evidence collected, the property is released back to the people responsible for it. That means the owner, the estate, or for a rental unit in Over-the-Rhine or Dayton's Oregon District, the landlord.
Some families assume the county will send someone because the coroner was involved. It will not. If you are an executor living in another state and the house is in Sidney or London, plan for cleanup as a separate private job once the release comes through.
Offices that have moved, and one that will
Hamilton County's coroner left its longtime building on Eden Avenue near the University of Cincinnati medical campus and opened a new coroner and crime lab facility at 4477 Carver Woods Drive in Blue Ash in 2021. Older directions and some funeral home paperwork may still show the Eden Avenue address.
Butler County's coroner currently lists its office in the Government Services Center at 315 High Street in Hamilton. WVXU reported in October 2025 that the county broke ground on a new combined coroner's office, morgue and 911 dispatch center on Princeton Road in Hamilton, expected to open in 2027. Check the county site before you go.
Madison County's coroner page notes a recent move and gives a London post office box for mail. When an office lists only a mailing address, call the county before driving there.
Using the table below
Each row was checked against the county's own website or a county directory while this guide was written. Fayette's row comes from the county's own departments page. For Clark, Preble and Champaign we could not confirm a street address on a county site, so those rows give only the county seat. Ask the county before you drive there. Phone numbers are left off on purpose; the county pages carry the current ones.
The coroner always serves the whole county, even where this referral line covers only part of it. Highland County's coroner works from Hillsboro, for example, though the line only serves Leesburg (45135) and Lynchburg (45142). Logan County's office is in Bellefontaine and Union County's is in Marysville, and neither of those towns is in the cleanup coverage area.
After the coroner releases the home
Once the coroner and police have finished, the cleanup decision belongs to whoever controls the property. South of the Dayton area, the (513) 962-0944 line handles Warren, Butler, Hamilton, Clinton and Brown counties along with the Loveland and Goshen ZIPs in Clermont and the Leesburg and Lynchburg ZIPs in Highland; a call there is connected with an independent provider. For Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Miami, Preble, Darke, Shelby, Champaign and the covered parts of Logan, Union, Madison and Fayette, use (937) 200-8811.
Before work starts, it helps to have the coroner's case number, the name of the investigator or detective, and confirmation that the home has been released. Insurance adjusters in Cincinnati and Dayton often ask for that information, and the cleanup company may need it to document why the job was done. If belongings are still held by the coroner or the police, note what is missing so nothing is mistaken for lost during the clean-out.
Out-of-state relatives sometimes ask the coroner's office to recommend a company. As public offices, the coroners in Xenia, Lebanon and elsewhere may prefer not to point families toward one private business, so do not be surprised if staff decline to name anyone. A funeral director may share names, and the referral line can connect you with a provider for that county.
Worth holding on to
- All 19 counties here use an elected physician coroner; none uses a medical examiner.
- Hamilton County's coroner moved to Carver Woods Drive in Blue Ash in 2021.
- Coroners handle investigation, release, belongings and findings, never cleanup.
- Smaller counties often send autopsies to larger county facilities.
- Confirm any office location on the county site before driving there.
Questions readers ask
- Did the Hamilton County coroner leave Eden Avenue?
- Yes. Since 2021 the coroner and the county crime lab have worked from 4477 Carver Woods Drive, Blue Ash, ZIP 45242. The office website lists weekday hours and has pages on release, belongings and death certificates.
- Does Ohio have a medical examiner or a coroner?
- Ohio uses elected county coroners, and state law requires them to be physicians. A few large counties far from here have adopted a medical examiner structure, but every county in Southwest Ohio, including Hamilton and Montgomery, runs an elected coroner's office under Ohio Revised Code chapter 313.
- Will an Ohio county coroner clean up after a death, or is that left to the family?
- No. The coroner's office investigates the death, identifies the person, notifies family and protects personal property, but it does not clean the home. When investigators hand the house back, the cleanup becomes a private matter for whoever controls it, and most families hire a company that does this work.
- How long does a coroner's report take in Ohio?
- It varies by case and county. The Clark County coroner's page says reports can be ready in a few days or take four to eight weeks, depending on the type of examination. Toxicology testing usually adds time. Ask the coroner's office in your county for an estimate on your specific case.
- Which county coroner handles a death in Dayton?
- Anywhere in Montgomery County, from Trotwood to Miamisburg, the case goes to the coroner on West Third Street downtown, in the same building as the regional crime lab. A home on the Greene County side of a border suburb would fall to the Greene County coroner in Xenia instead.
- How do I get my loved one's belongings back from the coroner?
- Call the coroner's office in the county where the death happened. Hamilton County's office says clothing and personal effects are logged on arrival and in most cases go out with the person to the funeral director. Ohio Revised Code 313.14 lets the person with the right of disposition ask for them. After a homicide or a vehicle crash, items may stay with the coroner or the police for a while.
