From Bloomfield to a commuter city

The town was platted as Bloomfield in 1815 and renamed Trenton in 1831, after New Jersey's capital, because Ohio already had a Bloomfield post office. It was once a stop on the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway and had only 387 people in 1900.

Growth came later: 3,064 residents in 1960, 5,278 in 1970 and 13,021 at the 2020 Census. So most Trenton homes are post-1960 houses and subdivisions, with a smaller older core around State Street and farmhouses scattered through Madison Township.

Outside city limits in Madison Township, farmhouses come with barns and detached garages, and an outbuilding may need attention as well as the house.

One river crossing that matters

State Route 73 runs through Trenton on State Street and crosses the Great Miami River toward Excello and Lemon Township, then on toward Middletown. Downstream toward Hamilton, Liberty Fairfield Road crosses near Woodsdale.

State Routes 4, 122 and 744 cross Madison Township around the city. Much of State Route 73 between Trenton and Franklin follows the old Miami and Erie Canal path. Give the cross street, and for township properties any long-lane or barn details, when you call.

What a Trenton caller usually needs

Who handles what after a death here

The Trenton Police Department responds inside the city, while the Butler County Sheriff's road patrol covers unincorporated Madison Township. Sudden or unattended deaths are reported to Dr. Lisa K. Mannix's office, the Butler County Coroner, in Hamilton's Government Services Center.

Neither city officers nor the coroner clean. Once the home is released, the family, a landlord, or an executor makes the call. Along State Street and in the subdivisions around it, neighbors and relatives often know each other, so decide early who will speak for the household and be the contact with the cleanup company.

Families coping with a death by suicide can ask the coroner's office in Hamilton about the county's LOSS/DOSS team. A neighbor or relative off State Street who is struggling can text 988, or call it, and talk with a Suicide & Crisis Lifeline counselor.

A family settling a Trenton estate may need the coroner's report for insurers or the bank; the coroner's website explains how families request records.

A small city on the west bank

Edgewood High School serves the city, and the Edgewood district also reaches into parts of surrounding Madison Township, which is otherwise in the Madison Local district. School names are a handy reference when describing where a township property sits.

The railroad that once made the town a stop on the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton line helped set the shape of the older blocks around State Street, while newer streets spread out from that core as the population grew after 1960.

Next steps for a Trenton family

Before cleanup on a State Street house or a Madison Township farm, ask the homeowner's insurance company what the policy says about biohazard work; many policies help, but terms differ. A renter here should know a renters policy mostly protects belongings, while the landlord's insurance usually applies to the building.

If the damage traces to a crime, the Attorney General's fund for victims may return up to $750 a claim in cleaning costs to someone who qualifies. Keep receipts together with the report number from the Trenton Police Department.

Executors who live outside Butler County can arrange for a relative or neighbor in town to open the house and meet the crew, and should tell the insurer and any mortgage company what happened.

What Trenton callers ask first

Does the city of Trenton clean up after a death or crime?
No. The Trenton Police Department and the Butler County Coroner investigate, but cleanup is a private job for the owner, family or landlord. After release, dial (513) 962-0944 to be put through to an independent company covering 45067. Keep the police report number for the insurer.
Is Madison Township outside Trenton covered?
Yes. All of Butler County is covered, including Madison Township areas around Trenton like Woodsdale. Police service there is the Butler County Sheriff rather than Trenton Police, but the coroner is the same county office in Hamilton. Have the township road name ready when calling.
Are farm buildings near Trenton included?
Cleanup companies can work in barns, garages and outbuildings as well as houses. Describe the building, the lane access and any livestock or equipment nearby when you call, so the provider understands the property before they visit. Mention whether the building is near Woodsdale or elsewhere in Madison Township.
