Hamilton County, Ohio · part of Hamilton County Suburbs

Each has its own police coverage, and the Hamilton County Coroner investigates unexplained deaths, but cleaning a home afterward is a private job. From Victorian porches to factory-town rentals

Wyoming's older streets are lined with weatherboard Victorians, along with Sears catalog houses from the early 1900s and post-war ranch and contemporary homes. These houses often have original woodwork, plaster and hardwood floors worth saving, so it is fair to ask a cleanup company how it will remove only what is affected.

Lockland grew along the canal, whose drop once powered a gristmill, and around the Stearns and Foster mattress works, which moved to the village in 1880; the factory's last smokestack came down in 2015. The village counted 1,671 housing units in 2020, many of them older frame homes and rentals. Reading had 5,059 units, from small-town houses near the Benson Street shops to apartment buildings.

In a Lockland or Reading rental, the landlord controls the building and usually signs the cleanup order. A tenant or family member can still be the one who calls, as long as the owner is brought in.

Three police departments and one county coroner

Reading police work from 1000 Market Street and also patrol Arlington Heights, which disbanded its own department in 2016. Lockland's department is at 101 North Cooper Avenue. Wyoming's 19 full-time officers work out of 600 Grove Avenue. Whichever one responds will hold the report number you need for insurance.

If a death is sudden or unattended, officers call in the Hamilton County Coroner. Since 2021 that office has worked from Blue Ash, a few miles northeast, instead of its old Corryville building. The coroner's staff release the body and the scene; they do not clean, and neither do the police in Reading, Lockland or Wyoming.

For a house owned by the person who died, the next of kin or an executor appointed through Hamilton County Probate Court authorizes the work.

A creek, a canal and an interstate

Mill Creek is the dividing line here. It separates Reading on the east from Lockland and Arlington Heights on the west, and the 1901 Benson Street Bridge, the second concrete rainbow-arch bridge built in the country, still carries traffic over it. Lockland got its name from the first set of locks on the Miami and Erie Canal north of Cincinnati.

When the canal closed in 1929, its right-of-way was reused for the Wright-Lockland Highway and later the Mill Creek Expressway, which became I-75. Arlington Heights sits almost entirely inside the wide median of that expressway. US 42 and OH 126 serve Reading, while Springfield Pike, an 1806 road, runs through the middle of Wyoming.

With I-75 running through the area, most 45215 addresses are a short drive from an interchange. The bigger planning questions tend to be about the house itself: stairs, an upper-floor apartment, or a historic porch that equipment has to pass through carefully.

Next steps for a household in 45215

Keep children and pets out of the affected area, close the room off, and avoid running a whole-house fan in a Wyoming Victorian or Reading bungalow until a crew has looked at it. Photograph damage before anything is moved.

Ask any provider you speak with how workers are trained for bloodborne pathogens, what they will remove, and how waste leaves the property. If a crime was involved, an eligible victim in Reading, Lockland or Wyoming may recover some scene-cleaning costs from the Ohio Attorney General's crime victims fund.

Reading questions, answered briefly

Who patrols Arlington Heights now that it has no police department?
The Reading Police Department. Arlington Heights disbanded its department on January 1, 2016, the Hamilton County Sheriff covered it for a time, and since 2018 Reading officers have patrolled the village. If police responded to a death or crime there, Reading is the department to contact for the report.
Can a cleanup company protect original woodwork in an old Wyoming home?
Often, yes. A careful crew removes only the materials that were actually affected and cleans the rest. Tell the provider the house is in Wyoming's historic district or has original trim and floors, and ask them to explain before work starts which pieces they expect to remove and why.
Is all of ZIP 45215 served by the same referral line?
Yes. Reading, Lockland, Wyoming and Arlington Heights are all in Hamilton County and all share 45215. Calling (513) 962-0944 with the street address connects you to an independent provider serving that stretch of the Mill Creek valley. There is no charge for the referral, and you are free to ask questions before agreeing to any work.
