Death and Trauma Cleanup for Price Hill and Lower Price Hill

Hamilton County, Ohio · part of Cincinnati

On the West Side hills, cleanup after an unattended death, a crime or a hoarded home is handled by a private company, not by District 3 police or the coroner. If the property is in Price Hill, Lower Price Hill, Sedamsville or Riverside, call (513) 962-0944. The free referral line connects you with an independent biohazard provider working 45204 and 45205.

District 3, the coroner and the property owner

Cincinnati Police District 3 covers East, West and Lower Price Hill along with Sedamsville and Riverside. The city police treat the Mill Creek as the line between the lower neighborhood and Queensgate, which matters if a report is filed near that edge.

When a death needs investigation, the Hamilton County Coroner's Office, now in Blue Ash, takes over the person's care and releases them to the funeral home. Investigators do not clean. Once officers leave, the owner of the flat, the landlord of a rented unit, or the executor of an estate decides who does the work.

Three neighborhoods on one big hill

Price Hill is really three of Cincinnati's 52 official neighborhoods. In 2020, West Price Hill had about 19,960 residents, East Price Hill about 15,241, and Lower Price Hill only 1,070, together roughly 16,400 housing units on slightly more than six square miles.

The hill takes its name from Gen. Rees E. Price, who bought and developed much of it. An incline railway once climbed about 350 feet from Eighth Street and Glenway Avenue, and the hilltop grew into an Irish and German Catholic stronghold anchored by parishes and schools like Elder and Seton.

What a Price Hill caller usually needs

Families in Price Hill can reach 988 by phone or text if a death was a suicide.

Hills, viaducts and River Road

Most traffic reaches the hilltop by climbing West Eighth Street or Warsaw Avenue from the Mill Creek valley, or by Glenway Avenue from the west. River Road, signed as US 50, runs along the Ohio through Sedamsville and Riverside below the bluffs.

For a crew, the hill shapes the job. Long exterior stairways, tight alleys and steep driveways mean equipment may be carried by hand, and winter ice on the side streets can slow loading. A quick description of the front steps and parking helps the provider plan.

The riverside ZIP and the hilltop ZIP

ZIP 45204 is the lower and riverside piece: Lower Price Hill around Oyler School, Sedamsville and Riverside along River Road, the lower slopes of East Price Hill, and a corner of South Fairmount.

ZIP 45205 sits on top of the hill. It covers most of East Price Hill, including the Warsaw Avenue business strip and Mount Echo Park, the eastern part of West Price Hill around Glenway Avenue, and a small slice of South Fairmount. The western end of West Price Hill uses 45238, which is not part of this page.

Brick flats, steep lots and long front stairs

The typical house on the hill is brick, two or three stories, set on a narrow lot that drops away behind it. Two-family flats with separate entrances are everywhere along Warsaw Avenue and the side streets, which means one unit may be occupied while the other needs cleanup.

Down below, closer to the Cincinnati riverfront, Lower Price Hill and Sedamsville hold older, smaller houses near the river and the Mill Creek. Census data for 45204 show most homes there were built in the 1950s or earlier and a little over half are rented. Basements in this low ground can take on river water, which complicates any biohazard job that reaches the lowest floor.

Practical next steps on the West Side

Before anyone starts, walk the house with the person who holds authority over it. Up here that is often a sibling handling a parent's estate or a landlord who owns several doubles along Glenway Avenue, and the cleanup company will want that person's signature.

If the death or injury followed a crime, ask the District 3 officer for the report number. State law lets the Attorney General's office pay back an eligible victim for reasonable cleaning of a Glenway or Warsaw Avenue home, with a $750 limit on each claim, and that application asks for the report number.

Neighbors on these close-set streets often notice crews and ask questions. A provider can work with unmarked vehicles if you request it, which keeps things quieter on a block of doubles off Warsaw Avenue.

Price Hill questions, answered briefly

My late father's house is in West Price Hill. Who arranges the cleanup?
Usually the executor or the family member handling the estate. Once District 3 and the Hamilton County Coroner release the home, nobody from the city returns to clean. Call (513) 962-0944 and the line connects you with an independent provider that serves 45205 and 45204.
One side of our two-family flat in East Price Hill needs cleanup. Is the other side at risk?
It can be. Shared walls, floor framing and basements let odors travel between units in the older brick doubles along Warsaw Avenue. Ask the provider to check the attached unit and the shared basement, and let the other household know when work will happen.
Does the line cover Sedamsville and Riverside?
Yes, those riverside neighborhoods are part of 45204. Houses along River Road sit in low ground near the Ohio River, so mention any past flooding or basement water when you call, since that can change how the lower level is cleaned.
