Colerain Avenue, two interstates and a landmark you can see for miles

Colerain Avenue, US 27, is the township's main north-south artery, and Northgate Mall, a shopping hub for the west side, anchors the Northgate community. I-275 and I-74 both cross the township, and Springdale Road is where the police headquarters stands. The Great Miami River forms part of the township boundary.

The tallest point most drivers notice is the Rumpke Sanitary Landfill, visible from US 27 and described as the largest landform in Hamilton County. It is a handy reference when giving directions to a rural address in the northern part of the township.

Because Colerain is so large, travel time from one end to the other is real. Ask the provider when they expect to arrive and plan around it, rather than counting on a particular hour.

Four ZIP codes across 43 square miles

Colerain Township spreads over 42.9 square miles of land and had 59,239 residents in 2020. It has no single downtown. Instead the Census divides it into communities such as Groesbeck, White Oak, Northgate, Northbrook, Pleasant Run, Dunlap, Dry Ridge, Taylor Creek, Mount Healthy Heights and Skyline Acres, and the Postal Service spreads them over four ZIPs.

45239 serves Groesbeck and part of White Oak, and also reaches into North College Hill. 45247 covers the rest of White Oak, a community split between Colerain and Green townships, along with nearby areas the postal list tags as Groesbeck. 45251 is centered on Northgate and also takes in parts of Groesbeck, Pleasant Run, Northbrook and Dunlap. 45252 covers the Taylor Creek area and more of Dunlap.

Mail in all four is addressed to Cincinnati, though none of these places are inside the city. Any of the four is covered by the same referral line.

Township police and the county coroner

Colerain Township runs its own police department from 4200 Springdale Road. Its officers respond to deaths and crimes in every part of the township, from Groesbeck apartments to farmhouses near the Great Miami River. When a death is sudden or unexplained, they call the Hamilton County Coroner, whose staff have operated out of Blue Ash since 2021.

Once the coroner's investigators and township police release the house, their part is finished. The person who owns or controls the property chooses a cleanup company: a spouse or adult child, an executor appointed by Hamilton County Probate Court, or the landlord when the home is rented.

Colerain has apartment complexes as well as rented houses. In those, the owner or management company usually controls access and approves the work, even if a relative of the tenant is the one who calls.

Groesbeck's old roots, Northgate's subdivisions

Groesbeck is older than it looks. It began as West Union and took its present name in 1857, when a post office opened and borrowed the name of Ohio congressman William S. Groesbeck. Today it is a census-designated place of 7,365 people within the township.

Much of the rest of Colerain is suburban subdivisions, with apartment and condominium complexes mixed in. In a finished basement or a carpeted family room, the materials that absorb fluids and odor are carpet, pad, drywall and subfloor, and a careful crew removes only the sections that were affected.

Dunlap, about 15 miles north of downtown Cincinnati, covers more than six square miles with only 1,658 residents, so homes there sit farther apart. If a house relies on a well or septic system, or has barns or outbuildings, mention it when you call; it can change how a crew plans water use and waste removal.

Practical steps for a Colerain household

Close off the room, keep pets out, and do not try to pull up carpet or wash surfaces yourself; in a carpeted Colerain room, fluids can reach the pad and subfloor beneath. Photograph the area and get the report number from Colerain Township police.

Ask the insurer for a White Oak or Northgate house whether the homeowner's policy pays for this kind of loss; plenty do, yet the fine print differs. Where the damage traces back to a crime, an eligible victim can seek partial repayment from the Attorney General's victim program, reachable at 614-466-5610.

Common Colerain Township questions

Groesbeck has a Cincinnati mailing address. Does the city police it?
No. Groesbeck is an unincorporated community in Colerain Township, even though its mail goes to Cincinnati addresses. Police calls there are handled by the Colerain Township Police Department, and the Hamilton County Coroner investigates any death that needs it. The same cleanup referral line covers the whole township.
Which ZIP codes in Colerain Township does this line cover?
All four: 45239, 45247, 45251 and 45252. Together they take in Groesbeck, White Oak, Northgate, Northbrook, Pleasant Run, Dunlap and Taylor Creek. Give the address when you dial (513) 962-0944, and the free line sends you on to an outside firm that already takes jobs in the township.
What if the home is on a rural lot with a well or septic system?
Tell the provider at the start. If a Dunlap-area or other outlying Colerain home relies on a well or septic system, the crew may need to plan water use and waste handling differently. It does not usually stop the job, but it should be part of the written plan.
