I-74, US 50 and three rivers

I-74 passes east of downtown with exits 1 and 3, and runs about 21 miles southeast to Cincinnati. US 50 cuts through Cleves and leads about 16 miles east to downtown. The Whitewater River runs near Harrison, and in Miami Township the Great Miami River meets the Ohio at the lowest point in the state.

Low ground near these rivers can flood. If a property is near the Great Miami or Ohio, mention any recent high water when you call, because flood damage and biohazard cleanup can overlap and the insurer may treat them separately.

Three ZIPs, three towns and their townships

ZIP 45002 belongs to Cleves, a village of 3,414 founded in 1818 and named for John Cleves Symmes, who laid out the town. It sits in the middle of Miami Township, which also holds the Miami Heights and Shawnee census-designated places.

ZIP 45052 is North Bend, a village of 835 people at the spot where the Ohio River makes its most northerly bend between the Muskingum and the Mississippi. Shawnee Lookout, the Great Parks hilltop on Lawrenceburg Road, uses a North Bend 45052 address.

Who shows up, and who does not

Harrison has its own city police department; the city offices are at 300 George Street. Cleves and North Bend, like Miami Township around them, rely on the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office for patrol.

In 2025 the sheriff and several western townships, including Harrison and Whitewater, disagreed over paying for dedicated patrols. Township trustees said deputies would still answer emergency calls. For a death at home, 911 is still the right first call.

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office is a long drive away, in Blue Ash on Carver Woods Drive. From the west side, it usually makes sense to start coroner questions by phone and save the drive for collecting belongings or paperwork. The coroner and deputies do not clean; once released, the home is the owner's or estate's responsibility.

River towns, tornado rebuilds and newer subdivisions

North Bend was founded in 1789 and is tied to two presidents: William Henry Harrison lived there and is buried at the tomb memorial off US 50, and his grandson Benjamin Harrison was born there. Cleves dates to 1818.

Harrison was laid out in 1810, became a city in 1981, and had 5,046 housing units in 2020. Parts of the city were hit by an F4 tornado on June 2, 1990, and rebuilt quickly, so some blocks hold newer construction than their age would suggest.

Rural lots in Harrison and Whitewater townships can have wells, septic systems, barns and detached garages. Tell the provider about any of these, since cleanup in an outbuilding or near a well calls for a different plan than a finished bedroom.

Paperwork for a west side estate

Many Cleves and North Bend homes pass to children who now live elsewhere in Ohio or out of state. Before the cleanup crew arrives, ask the insurer whether the homeowners policy may respond to a death-related loss, and get the claim number in writing. Policies differ, so the adjuster's answer for one west side house says little about the next.

If the home is a rental in the city or Cleves, the landlord's building coverage is normally the one to check for floors and walls, while the tenant's own policy mainly protects belongings. Keep receipts from the provider, the disposal paperwork and the police or sheriff's case number together in one folder.

Where Ohio runs out

This is the last stretch of Ohio before Indiana. The city's western edge touches Indiana, and North Bend's village office notes it sits about six miles from the state line. Kentucky is across the Ohio River to the south.

This referral line covers the Ohio side only. A house anywhere in Indiana or Northern Kentucky is outside the service area, even if the mailing address looks close. Not sure which state a parcel falls in? For any address this line serves, the property tax bill will name Hamilton County, Ohio.

Harrison questions, answered briefly

Does this line serve West Harrison, Indiana?
No. The referral line covers Southwest Ohio counties only. Harrison, Ohio, ZIP 45030, is covered, along with Cleves and North Bend. Properties across the state line in Indiana, or across the river in Kentucky, need a provider found through a different source.
Who handles a death in Cleves or North Bend?
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office patrols both villages, and the county coroner, based in Blue Ash, investigates unattended or sudden deaths. Once the home is released, the family, estate or landlord arranges cleanup. Then (513) 962-0944 can put the family in touch with an outside company that works Miami Township.
How far is the coroner's office from Harrison?
The office is on Carver Woods Drive in Blue Ash, on the opposite side of Hamilton County from Harrison. Many matters, such as death certificates and autopsy report requests, can be started by phone. Plan an in-person trip mainly for picking up belongings.
