Police, fire and the coroner in each place

Terrace Park runs its own police, fire and emergency medical services from the village, with offices at 428 Elm Avenue. The village website notes that its emergency services rely on volunteers.

Camp Dennison sits in southern Symmes Township, and a small parcel of Columbia Township also carries the name. Police service in both townships comes from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office; Symmes Township's fire and rescue come from the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department.

Either agency calls the Hamilton County Coroner's Office, now located on Carver Woods Drive in Blue Ash, for a sudden or unattended death. Staff there see the person to a funeral home and give back valuables. They do not clean. That job belongs to the homeowner, the estate or, for a rental, the landlord.

A Civil War camp and a village on old earthworks

Camp Dennison takes its name from William Dennison, Ohio's 24th governor and later Lincoln's Postmaster General. The camp opened in 1861 as a recruiting and training post, and more than 50,000 Union soldiers were mustered in or out there. After 1865 a small community grew up on the site, partly from materials salvaged from the old camp. Today it is a census-designated place of 384 people.

Terrace Park was incorporated in 1893, but its history goes back much further. One of the largest of Hamilton County's prehistoric earthworks was built here, and Abraham Covalt set up a fortified settlement in 1789 that was abandoned in 1792. The 2020 Census counted 2,355 residents on 1.24 square miles.

Homes in two small places

The village describes Terrace Park as a quiet residential community of tree-lined streets, and most of it is single-family houses within walking or biking distance of the village's own elementary school. In an older Terrace Park house, a crew may have to work around a basement, a crawlspace or original woodwork the family wants kept.

Camp Dennison is tiny and mixed. Two surviving camp buildings on Glendale-Milford Road, at 7509 and 7567, were listed on the National Register in 1973 as the Waldschmidt-Camp Dennison District. In older structures, ask the provider whether lead paint or old flooring changes how affected material is removed.

The valley roads and the trail

Ohio 126, Glendale-Milford Road, runs north and south through the center of Camp Dennison. In Terrace Park, a 2006 extension of the Little Miami Scenic Trail follows US 50 to Avoca Park in Terrace Park. The same trail passes Camp Dennison on its way north to Loveland.

With the Little Miami and its trail running side by side, local roads can confuse an outside crew. Give the provider the exact address, the nearest cross street and any detail about steep or shared driveways, so the crew can plan where to park and how to carry materials out without blocking Glendale-Milford Road or the trail access.

Terrace Park questions, answered briefly

Is Milford covered, since it is right across the river from Terrace Park?
No. Milford is not part of this referral area. The line serves Terrace Park (45174) and Camp Dennison (45111) in Hamilton County, and in Clermont County only Loveland 45140 and Goshen 45122. A Milford property would need a cleanup company found another way.
Who patrols Camp Dennison if it is not a village?
Camp Dennison is unincorporated, in southern Symmes Township. Symmes Township contracts with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, so deputies from the township's Safety Center respond to calls there. The county coroner investigates sudden deaths. Cleanup is arranged afterward by the property owner or estate, since neither the deputies nor the coroner's staff remove or disinfect anything.
Does a Terrace Park homeowners policy pay for cleanup after a death?
Sometimes. Many policies respond to sudden losses inside the home, but the answer turns on the specific policy language. Call the insurer before work starts, keep the Terrace Park Police report number if there is one, and ask the cleanup company for a written scope and photos.
